This 1835 lighthouse can be seen in the distance from the breakwater at the end of Bearskin Neck in Rockport or from some of the excursion cruises in the area.
The wooden keeper's house still stands but is currently boarded up and in disrepair. Although the old entryway to the tower was destroyed by a storm in October, 1991, it has since been replaced- an oil house also remains and is included with this model.
We thought it would be a good idea to include at least one non-renovated lighthouse in this Fiddlers Green Lighthouse Series and to donate ALL the proceeds from it's sale to the Lighthouse Preservation Society, Newburyport, Massachusetts.

Straitsmouth Harbor Lighthouse
Rockport's vital granite business began in the 1820s and, together with tile already flourishing fishing industry, put the town on the map. Straitsmouth Island light was built in 1835 to assist mariners with entry into the harbor nearby Pigeon Cove. Several vessels were lost in storms in the 1830s and 1840s in the vicinity of the island, prompting placement of a warning buoy near Averys Rock nearby.
In the 1850s a new Fresnel lens was installed and in 1896 the present 37-foot brick tower built to replace the old one. The light was converted from white to green in 1932, automated in 1967 and the Fresnel lens subsequently removed. The island was sold to private ownership in 1941, but was eventually acquired by the Massachusetts Audubon Society; the property is now part of the Ipswich Wildlife Sanctuary.
