Dear FG Folks,

5 March 2003

Okay, I've finally succumbed to the overwhelming logic of renewing my Magic Key. But I never received it, originally. Here's why (bear with me-this isn't a whine or a flame. Read on, MacDuff)...

When I got orders to Bosnia, I bought the super-duper Airplane MegaDisk back in August of 2001 so I'd have both
1. a cheap, portable hobby to keep me somewhat sane during the Balkan winter, and
2 something to pass out to the kids in the schools/orphanages (they're pretty much the same thing over)

Geez-you guys not only sent me the airplanes, but the buildings, too, along with a couple of out-of-date disks you figured I could find a use for over there. By the time I dropped boats in TuzIa, I had run through four reams of cardstock and two color cartridges for my trusty HP. I figured I had enough models for giveaways (and a couple for me-I ain't that altruistic) for at least the six months I was gone, and if I got really bored, I'd have the Magic Key for some new models.

Two weeks after I passed out the first hundred and fifty or so to our Aviation Liaison Officer for his school visits, I started getting requests from the Infantry guys going out on patrols-they figured the models would be a hit with the kids, who'd then be a bit freer with info on weapons caches, etc. To make a long story short, I was actually over there for almost eight months, and if I hadn't had a buddy in the print shop, I would have spent a fortune having cardstock sent over from the states. The kids loved the models-I figure we passed out close to two thousand of 'em! And after I hung up a Zero, an Me-109 and a Corsair in Flight Ops ("That thing's made out of Paper? Where'd you get it?"), I made a couple of converts among the other pilots, and at least one of 'em bought a MegaDisk. No, no-don't thank me. Happy to do it.

But I never got the Magic Key. Because the Internet is, full of holes, I wasn't allowed access to dot-com email on my dot-mil computer-security and all that good stuff. When I could finally open my aol account, all the spammed ads urging me to buy Viagra on-line, visit web-sites of dubious virtue and enlarge certain portions of my anatomy had forced out all the legit stuff that had accumulated prior to May of 2002. I'll let you in on a secret-I was so happy with everylhing that you folks sent me originally, I didn't even mind not getting the Magic Key. Never missed it.

BUT NOW I'M BACK HOMEIII And the new FG models look like they're going to be a blast.

Awesome story and choice for the Greenie if the Year. Just shows that world peace may be possible through paper modeling. TW

What a terrific up-beat story. Thank you for sharing! Best wishes, Fred

I applaud your choice for the Greenie of the Year Award for 2003. Well done. Rich North Riverside, Illinois

Your Greenie of the Year story is wonderful. It deserves a much larger audience far beyond the card modeling community. Thanks for sharing it. David

Thanks for the feature 'Greenie of the Year 2003' - a well deserved lifetime's Magic Keys. An excellent ambassador amidst the pain and confusion of the present day world, more than doing his bit to redress such ills. Good luck to all the team in your new form ...Phil

Thanks for this feature of promoting peace through cardmodeling..What an inspiring chap!! Mel

As a result of your article and Bill's spirit, I've just dropped off ALL of my built paper models at the nearby Children's Hospital knowing it will bring joy to the kids. Ironically, joy to me as I start all over agin (sic) building more. Jessie
